This painting depicts the death of Louis IX of France, known as Saint Louis, in 1270 during the Eighth Crusade near Tunis. Weakened by illness, the king died while on a military campaign in foreign lands. His death marks the end of a remarkable reign characterized by piety, a strong sense of justice, and religious commitment. Saint Louis was quickly canonized and became a model of the Christian king. This scene illustrates both the human dimension of the ruler and the lasting legacy of his reign in French history.
