Mortimer saisi par le roi

Mortimer saisi par le roi

James William Edmund Doyle · Domaine public

This illustration depicts Edward III seizing Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, the favorite and lover of his mother Isabella of France. At the beginning of Edward III’s reign, power was largely controlled by Isabella and Mortimer after the fall of Edward II. In 1330, the young king took the initiative, had Mortimer arrested at Nottingham, and then executed. The scene therefore illustrates a decisive moment when Edward III freed himself from his mother’s tutelage and her circle in order to rule personally.
