Mosaïque d’Apollon et Marsyas (Lugdunum)

Art romain · Domaine public

This mosaic discovered in Lugdunum (modern-day Lyon) depicts a mythological episode between Apollo and Marsyas. According to the myth, Marsyas challenges the god Apollo in a musical contest and is punished after his defeat. This scene illustrates the importance of mythological narratives in Roman art, widely spread throughout the provinces of the Empire. The presence of such works in Gaul reflects the cultural integration of local elites and the diffusion of Roman artistic traditions.
