Barricade dans la rue de Soufflot, à Paris, le 25 juin 1848

Horace Vernet · Public domain / domaine public

This painting by Horace Vernet, titled “On the Barricades on the Rue Soufflot, Paris, 25 June 1848,” depicts a scene from the June Days uprising of 1848 in Paris. The composition shows street fighting near the Panthéon, amid barricades, smoke, soldiers, and insurgents, in an atmosphere of urban violence and civil war. The image emphasizes the confusion of the clash, the density of the fighters, and the brutality of the confrontation within the constricted space of the street. Painted between 1848 and 1849, this oil on canvas, now in the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin, belongs to contemporary history painting and reflects Vernet’s attention to revolutions, street fighting, and the political upheavals of the nineteenth century.
