This print depicts Philip III the Bold carrying his father’s relics to Saint-Denis in 1270, in a scene of dynastic mourning and religious solemnity. The composition shows a vast outdoor procession: at the center, the cortège advances through a dense crowd of clerics, monks, bearers, and faithful onlookers, while many spectators kneel or bow in reverence. The image emphasizes less the individuality of faces than the collective scale of the ceremony, which combines remembrance of the deceased sovereign, royal piety, and affirmation of dynastic continuity. Through its ordered and ceremonial character, the work highlights the symbolic importance of Saint-Denis as the royal necropolis and as a major site of Capetian memory.
