This anonymous portrait, executed between 1623 and 1633, depicts **Louis XIII** in the context of the **Siege of La Rochelle** (1627-1628), in which the king personally took part from 12 October 1627. A work close in time to the events it depicts, this painting belongs to the tradition of royal portraits commemorating the great military actions of the reign, alongside the more famous depictions of Richelieu on the dike built to cut the city off from all maritime relief.
