This painting depicts the capture of Jerusalem by the Crusaders on July 15, 1099, the climax of the First Crusade launched a few years earlier at the call of Pope Urban II. After a long siege, the Christian armies seized the holy city, leading to violent fighting and heavy casualties among its inhabitants. This event marked the creation of the Latin states of the East and symbolizes both the military success of the Crusaders and the brutality of religious conflicts at the time.
