La reine Philippa intercédant pour les bourgeois de Calais

Alphonse de Neuville · No known copyright restrictions / domaine public

This illustration, captioned “Queen Philippa Interceding for the Burghers of Calais. Drawn by A. de Neuville,” depicts Queen Philippa of Hainaut intervening on behalf of the Burghers of Calais after the surrender of the city during the siege of 1346-1347. The composition presents a solemn scene of courtly supplication: kneeling or bowed figures face royal authority, while the queen occupies the dramatic center of the image. The illustration emphasizes the tension between justice, mercy, and monarchical authority, in a setting that gives the episode a theatrical and memorial dimension. Published in Ridpath's History of the World, it is not a direct witness to the medieval event but a nineteenth-century historical reconstruction intended to give visual form to major episodes of the Hundred Years’ War. It reflects the taste of historical illustration for scenes of supplication, gestures of royal mercy, and foundational moments in medieval political memory.
