Richelieu sur la digue de La Rochelle

Henri-Paul Motte · Public Domain Mark 1.0 / domaine public

This painting by Henri-Paul Motte, titled “Richelieu on the Sea Wall of La Rochelle,” depicts Cardinal Richelieu in the foreground standing on the dike built during the great siege of La Rochelle. Beside him stand several members of his entourage and military staff, while ships and military operations connected with the blockade of the harbor appear offshore. The composition emphasizes strategic control of the coastline, the political authority of Louis XIII’s chief minister, and the importance of the dike built in 1628 to prevent English relief from reaching the besieged city. Painted in 1881, this oil on canvas, now kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de La Rochelle, belongs to nineteenth-century history painting, attentive to major episodes of royal power, the late French Wars of Religion context, and the consolidation of monarchical authority against Protestant strongholds.
