This painting depicts Saint Eligius, a goldsmith who later became a bishop, presenting two golden saddles to King Chlothar II. Tasked with crafting a single saddle from a given amount of gold, Eligius produced two without misusing any material, demonstrating exceptional honesty. Impressed, the king recognized his virtue and took him into his service. The scene illustrates the importance of integrity, trust, and the relationship between royal power and religious figures in Merovingian society.
