Saint Martin partageant son manteau

Saint Martin partageant son manteau

Théodore Géricault (d’après Antoon van Dyck) · Domaine public

This painting depicts Saint Martin sharing his cloak with a beggar, a famous episode from his life. A Roman soldier who later became Bishop of Tours in the 4th century, Martin embodies Christian charity and the transition from the Roman world to Christian Gaul. This symbolic act of sharing his garment with a poor man became a model of compassion and generosity. The scene illustrates the emergence of Christian values in the societies of Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages.
