This painting depicts Saint Sigismund, King of the Burgundians in the 6th century, alongside Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, a Renaissance patron. Although created much later, the artwork presents Sigismund as an exemplary Christian ruler. He embodies the transformation of barbarian kings into Christian sovereigns in a world shaped by the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of medieval kingdoms. This representation highlights the spiritual and political dimensions of power in the early Middle Ages.
