L’Attaque à l’aube

Alphonse de Neuville · Public domain / domaine public

This painting by Alphonse de Neuville, titled “The Attack at Dawn,” depicts a combat scene in a snow-covered street, as soldiers advance between houses under the smoke of gunfire. The composition shows bodies lying in the snow, horses, a carriage halted or overturned in the turmoil, and fighters scattered through a constricted urban space. The image emphasizes the sudden brutality of the assault, the icy atmosphere of early morning, and the confusion of a clash fought in a village or small town. Produced in the late nineteenth century, the work belongs to the kind of military painting for which Neuville is known, with close attention to lighting effects, soldiers’ gestures, and the concrete violence of war on the ground.
