Les Barbares devant le camp romain de Tridentum

Les Barbares devant le camp romain de Tridentum

Lodovico Pogliaghi · Domaine public

This work by Lodovico Pogliaghi depicts barbarians gathered before the Roman camp of Tridentum, in a scene evoking military tension along the frontiers of the Roman Empire. Through its subject, the image refers to the clashes between Rome and the so-called barbarian peoples in the Alpine and Danubian regions, a central theme in the history of Late Antiquity and in the pressures placed upon the empire’s borders. The composition emphasizes the contrast between Roman defensive order, embodied by the fortified camp, and the threatening mass of warriors advancing in the foreground. Although it is a later artistic reconstruction, the work illustrates the interest of modern artists in major episodes of confrontation between Roman civilization and external peoples, in a dramatic historical mode.
