L’entrée de Jeanne d’Arc et de Charles VII à Reims

Ary Scheffer · Domaine public

This painting depicts the entry of Joan of Arc and Charles VII into Reims. In 1429, after the lifting of the siege of Orléans and several military successes, Joan of Arc accompanied the dauphin Charles to Reims, the traditional coronation city of the kings of France. This episode marks one of the most symbolic moments of the Hundred Years’ War, as it strengthened Charles VII’s legitimacy by leading him toward his coronation. The work thus presents Joan of Arc as a figure of fervor, hope, and national gathering in a romantic vision of French medieval history.
