This illustration, titled “The Huns at the Battle of Chalons,” depicts an extremely violent combat scene associated with the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains. The composition shows horsemen charging into the melee, spears raised, bodies thrown down, and a ground strewn with victims, in a dramatic vision dominated by movement, fury, and the chaos of impact. The image emphasizes the brutality of the clash, the savagery attributed to the invaders, and the almost apocalyptic dimension of the battlefield. Produced in the nineteenth century, it is not a direct witness to the ancient event but a historical reconstruction intended to give spectacular visual form to the great confrontations of Late Antiquity. It reflects the taste of historical illustration for scenes of cavalry, destruction, and the turning points of empires.
