Alphonse de Neuville · Public domain / domaine public

This painting by Alphonse de Neuville, titled “The Spy,” depicts a military scene from the Franco-Prussian War in a village occupied or crossed by soldiers. The composition shows several French officers gathered around a table outside an inn or house, while an arrested man is pointed at or searched under their gaze. Mounted soldiers and inhabitants watching from windows or from the background heighten the dramatic tension of the scene. The image emphasizes suspicion, military authority, and the latent brutality of relations between the army and civilians in wartime. Painted in 1880, the work belongs to late nineteenth-century military painting and reflects Neuville’s interest in episodes of surveillance, control, and summary justice within the context of the conflict.
