This illustration depicts the execution of Margaret of Burgundy, involved in the Tour de Nesle affair in the early 14th century. As the wife of King Louis X, she was accused of adultery with knights in a scandal that deeply affected the royal family. Arrested and imprisoned, she died in captivity under suspicious circumstances. This affair weakened the legitimacy of the Capetian dynasty and contributed to the succession crisis that followed the deaths of Philip IV’s sons.
