Brennus and Camillus

Paul Lehugeur · Public Domain Mark 1.0 / domaine public

This illustration by Paul Lehugeur, titled “Brennus and Camillus,” depicts the legendary episode of the sack of Rome by the Gauls in the fourth century BC, at the moment when the Gallic leader Brennus and the Roman Camillus are associated with the famous “Vae victis” scene. The composition shows Brennus near the scale where the gold ransom imposed on the Romans is being discussed, in an ancient setting that emphasizes the tension between Gallic victors and Roman vanquished. Created in 1886 for the book Histoire de France en cent tableaux, the image belongs to late nineteenth-century historical illustration, which sought to give dramatic form to foundational episodes combining Gallic history, Roman memory, and French national tradition.
