The Baptism of Constantine

The Baptism of Constantine

Atelier de Raphaël · Domaine public

This fresco depicts the baptism of Emperor Constantine, a symbolic moment in the history of Christianity within the Roman Empire. In the early 4th century, Constantine ended persecutions and granted freedom of worship to Christians. Although his baptism occurred late according to historical sources, it marks the gradual association of imperial power with Christianity. This event illustrates a major religious turning point in the Empire, which would lead a few decades later to Christianity becoming the official religion.
