Julius Sabinus Bidding Farewell to His Family

Julius Sabinus Bidding Farewell to His Family

Josef Platzer · Domaine public

This painting depicts the farewell of Julius Sabinus to his family, a Gallic leader who led a revolt against Rome in AD 69 during a period of turmoil in the Empire. Declaring himself emperor in Gaul, Sabinus attempted to take advantage of political chaos to challenge Roman authority. After the failure of his rebellion, he was captured and imprisoned. The scene portrays an intimate and tragic moment, marked by separation and inevitability. It symbolizes local resistance to Rome, but also the overwhelming dominance of the Empire over its provinces.
