Louis XI at Angers

Jules Dauban · Public Domain Mark 1.0 / domaine public

This work by Jules Dauban, titled “Louis XI at Angers,” depicts the granting of the charter to the burghers of the city of Angers by King Louis XI of France. The scene shows the sovereign at the center of a solemn setting, surrounded by notable figures and officers, in a composition that highlights royal authority and the political bond between the king and the city. Created in 1901, this history painting belongs to the tradition of civic and monarchical representations intended to celebrate major moments in the urban history of France and in royal power. Kept at the Hôtel de Ville in Angers, it also reflects the interest of the Third Republic in episodes from municipal and national history.
