This engraving, titled “Death of Robert the Strong in the battle of Brissarthe,” depicts the death of Robert the Strong during the Battle of Brissarthe in 866, in the context of the clashes between the Franks and the Vikings. The scene shows a violent struggle at the entrance of a building, in a dramatic composition marked by fallen bodies, scattered weapons, and the tragic gesture of the central figure at the moment of his fall. The image emphasizes the brutality of the combat and the heroic significance of Robert the Strong’s death, an important figure of the Frankish aristocracy and an ancestor of the Capetian dynasty. Created in the nineteenth century and published in Histoire de France en cent tableaux, this illustration belongs to the tradition of French historical imagery, which sought to give spectacular form to major military episodes of the national past.
