Port of La Rochelle

Auguste Trichon · Public Domain Mark 1.0 / domaine public

This engraving by Auguste Trichon, titled “Port of La Rochelle,” depicts the harbor of La Rochelle in a panoramic nineteenth-century view. The composition highlights the basins, quays, sailing ships and steam vessels, as well as the towers and buildings shaping the urban skyline. Rather than showing a specific event, the image offers a topographical and documentary vision of La Rochelle, emphasizing both its maritime activity, its commercial importance, and its identity as a port city. Published in 1866 in volume 2 of the Dictionnaire populaire illustré d'histoire, de géographie, de biographie, de technologie, de mythologie, d'antiquités, des beaux-arts et de littérature, this illustration belongs to the nineteenth-century scholarly tradition that sought to circulate visual representations of notable cities, landscapes, and monuments.
