This illustration by Gustav Adolf Closs depicts the killing of the Frankish prince Ragnachar by Clovis after his defeat in 509. The scene shows a dramatic episode from the early Frankish kingdom, in which Clovis eliminates a rival after battle, in a composition centered on the confrontation between victor and vanquished. Through its theatrical and heroic treatment, the image belongs to the historical imagination of the late nineteenth century, which sought to give powerful visual form to the political violence of the Merovingian age. Published around 1890 in the German work Bildersaal Deutscher Geschichte, it also reflects the interest of European illustrators in Frankish origins and in the figure of Clovis.
