View of the Château de Compiègne

Auteur inconnu · Public Domain Mark 1.0 / domaine public

This engraving, titled “View of the Château de Compiègne,” depicts the Château de Compiègne in a nineteenth-century architectural and topographical view. The composition highlights the palace’s long regular façades, its open court, and the monumental order of the ensemble, with a few figures enlivening the foreground. Rather than showing a specific event, the image offers a documentary representation of a major site in French royal and imperial history. Published in 1863 in the first volume of the Dictionnaire populaire illustré d'histoire, de géographie, de biographie, de technologie, de mythologie, d'antiquités, des beaux-arts et de littérature, this illustration belongs to the nineteenth-century scholarly tradition that sought to circulate views of notable monuments and sites.
