Located in the Morbihan, in Brittany, the site of Carnac houses the largest concentration of menhirs in the world, erected between roughly 4500 and 3000 BCE — right at the heart of the Neolithic, long before the Celts ever set foot in France. It was not the Gauls, still less Asterix and Obelix, who raised them, but communities of settled farmers capable of mobilizing considerable manpower to move and erect these blocks of local granite.


🗿 Three fields of menhirs, one scientific rediscovery

The site is divided into three main groups. The Le Ménec alignments count 1,099 menhirs spread across eleven rows, forming Carnac’s largest “menhir field.” Those of Kermario gather 1,029, across ten lines. Those of Kerlescan, finally, once numbered 540 according to the historical count, a figure now reduced to fewer than 300 through erosion and successive losses.

It was at the turn of the twentieth century that the site regained scientific attention. Following excavations led by James Miln, the archaeologist Zacharie Le Rouzic systematically identified and marked out the alignments in the 1920s and 1930s, using reddish mortar markers, before restoring the whole site between 1934 and 1935 — a site by then degraded by farming practices and vandalism. Le Ménec, Kermario, and Kerlescan were classified as historic monuments during this period, and the State acquired most of the land concerned.


❓ A mystery still debated

The exact function of the alignments remains the greatest mystery of French prehistory. The most precise hypothesis put forward by researchers sees them as a calendar observatory: the rows would mark lunar declinations between 18.5° and 28.5°, corresponding to an 18.6-year cycle — a true lunar calendar carved in stone, rather than a simple solstice marker. Others favor a social and political reading: a gathering space where Neolithic communities came together to trade and hold shared ceremonies, the alignments then serving to structure collective space and display the power of organized human groups. The most recent research, drawing on laser mapping and optically stimulated luminescence dating, now allows the precise chronology of the erection of the various blocks to be refined, without definitively settling between these hypotheses.

Lacking a scientific explanation for centuries, the region’s inhabitants imagined their own stories: the most famous holds that the stones are an army of Roman soldiers petrified by Saint Cornély to protect fleeing Christians; another claims they go down to drink at the sea once a year, on Christmas night.


🛡️ Preserving this treasure

Now protected, the site of Carnac is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. The fragility of the soil and the stones, exposed for more than six thousand years to the weather and to human visitors, demands strict management so that this testament to Neolithic human ingenuity may still endure for millennia to come.
