1285: Accession of Philip IV and Capetian Continuity

p5

Philip IV the Fair: State, Taxation and Conflict with the Papacy (1285–1314) · HIGH MIDDLE AGES

Philip IV, born in 1268, succeeds his father in October 1285, at about seventeen years of age. Succession is now a solid political fact: the Capetian monarchy has learned to survive deaths in campaign and court crises.

🏛️ A Heavy Legacy

The new king receives:

  • A domain enlarged by returns of apanage and acquisitions;
  • Denser but costly administration;
  • Open or latent conflicts, notably in Flanders and the Mediterranean space.

Through his marriage to Jeanne of Navarre, Philip is also king of Navarre (Philip I). The union attaches to Capetian power stakes of Champagne and Navarre: dynastic policy becomes a resource as much as an issue.

🧠 Key Points to Remember

  • 1285 confirms continuity: power is transmitted without collapse.
  • The reign that opens is that of a state requiring financing, administration and defense.
