Philip IV, born in 1268, succeeds his father in October 1285, at about seventeen years of age. Succession is now a solid political fact: the Capetian monarchy has learned to survive deaths in campaign and court crises.

Through his marriage to Jeanne of Navarre, Philip is also king of Navarre (Philip I). The union attaches to Capetian power stakes of Champagne and Navarre: dynastic policy becomes a resource as much as an issue.
