1364: Charles V's Accession and the Consolidation of Power

p5

Charles V the Wise: Reconquest, Statecraft, and the Western Schism (1364-1380) · HIGH MIDDLE AGES

Charles V became king in 1364 in a context of crisis: heavy ransom obligations, a kingdom damaged by mercenary violence, and a fragile Bretigny settlement. His key advantage was experience: he had already governed during the regency after Poitiers.

🧭 A King Shaped by Regency

Between 1356 and 1364, Charles had to:

  • negotiate with estates and towns;
  • raise resources without triggering political breakdown;
  • preserve state continuity without the sovereign.

This formed his style of rule: prudence, preparation, and administrative decision-making over dramatic gestures.

🏛️ Reasserting Authority

The first years of the reign aimed to close vulnerabilities:

  • restoring the council and chains of command;
  • securing Paris and strategic routes;
  • regaining initiative against rival princes without reckless escalation.

🧠 To Remember

  • 1364: Charles V inherited a vulnerable realm but a hardened state apparatus.
  • Internal consolidation came first, and made reconquest possible.
