1378: The Western Schism, Avignon, and Rome

p5

Charles V the Wise: Reconquest, Statecraft, and the Western Schism (1364-1380) · HIGH MIDDLE AGES

In 1378, Latin Christendom split as rival popes emerged, one recognized in Rome, the other in the Avignon obedience. The Western Schism was not only religious; it restructured diplomacy and political finance across Europe.

⚖️ Two Obediences, Two Diplomatic Systems

Every monarchy had to choose:

  • Rome, for continuity with an Italian-centered papacy;
  • Avignon, for strategic and political calculation.

Because papal authority shaped legitimacy, arbitration, and sanctions, the schism directly affected war and treaty systems.

🇫🇷 French Stakes

For France, the schism coincided with state strengthening. Obedience choice could:

  • facilitate or complicate diplomacy;
  • alter access to ecclesiastical resources;
  • transform a church crisis into a foreign-policy lever.

🧠 To Remember

  • 1378 opened a long European crisis of authority.
  • The schism amplified existing political rivalries.
